¿Un hipertexto fotográfico en Una novela real?: revisión del rol de las fotografías de Toyota Horiguchi en la novela de Minae Mizumura

Abstract

This paper proposes to examine the role played by Toyota Horiguchi’s photographic series in Minae Mizumura’s A True Novel, based on the concept of hypertext as defined by Gérard Genette. Its application to the photographs is proposed to constitute a photographic hypertext that serves as a response to its function in the book, which means turning Minae Mizumura’s novel into its hypotext. It is also explained that the main plot of Minae Mizumura’s novel is, at the same time, a hypertext of Emily Brontë’s famous novel Wuthering Heights. The photographic hypertext is studied from two perspectives for its analysis: on the one hand, Barthes’ ideas in Camera lucida: Reflections of hotography (1990) and “The Photographic Message” (1995) and, on the other hand, the approach of François Soulages in his article “From an Aesthetics of Photography to an Aesthetics of the Image” (2014). Barthes’s contribution is in his study of the structure of photography, the procedures of connotation, and the links between the imagen and the text, and between the image and the spectator, or the reader. François Soulages’ approach consists in his delimitation of the aesthetics of “at the same time”, which stands out for considering photography an artistic production.
